Week of the Dolly
Blog Post- A Eulogy for Joe Mulson. Sad news for Joe Mulson’s fans.
Yes, here at Goodnews River Lodge it was certainly the week of the Dolly Varden. The big dollies stage a run up the Goodnews River every year and the week past was the week.
Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday’s trips netted numerous fish like the one Mary and Don are holding. We caught them on Little Pinkie and orange gurgler flies, a Wob-L-Rite spoon, small Rooster Tail spinners, Pixies, orange beads, and small crappie jigs.

Silvers are being caught every day, although the numbers are still low. I’ve yet to see one- been busy fishing for dollies.
Brittany got her first fish on a fly, a small dolly on a Little Pinkie. Congratulations!

Through a complex series of circumstances I was able to photograph this rainbow trout just after he inhaled a mouse fly. If I had an eight-frame-a-second camera I might have gotten the eat!

We had the hottest weather since I’ve worked here this week, uncomfortably warm. The brillant sun may have affected the fishing, just a little bit.
The chums are mostly finished entering the river and are hard to get to bite now. They are digging redds and dropping eggs. The dollies and the rainbow trout like this.
Trout fishing has been steady. Effective flies include leeches, flesh flies, and my favorite, the mouse. Beaders have been getting them too.
Adam, Peggy, Hallie, and I went up Lookout Mountain one beautiful evening. That has to be the highest reward-to-effort hill I know of.

One of my fishermen caught a rock today. Actually it was a piece of gravel. At any rate, catching a rock with a hook does not happen every day, even here.
