Winds of Change Mosquito Lagoon Fishing Report

Aye, mateys, ’twas stormy mid-week it was. Friday’s trip revealed the water level in the Mosquito Lagoon had risen almost 12 inches since Monday. The fish moved! Thus the winds of change Mosquito Lagoon fishing report.

No, it’s not very big. But it is a fish.

Sunday afternoon found me thigh-deep in a local pond, tossing a Culprit Fat Max red shad worm with a spinning outfit. Six bites and four released black bass, and the only photos of the week, resulted. Nice way to spend a Sunday afternoon!

This one was the best of the day.

Monday morning the Mitzi was launched at a very busy River Breeze Park. Dr. Jeff Thill, a fly fisherman, was my passenger. While we visited a few spots that were devoid of life, we also hit three spots that had good numbers of fish. We could not get any of them to bite, however, and the skunk smacked right us in the face. Particularly painful in light of how good the fishing had been.

Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday we had clouds, wind, rain, sleet, hail… no, no, sorry, got a bit carried away. No sleet or hail, thank goodness. Anyway, I did not fish those days.

Friday found me in the Ocean Kayak, paddling out of River Breeze Park. The water had risen nearly a foot. I visited the spot where I got that big trout last week- nothing there. Very sad! That spot had been money for weeks.

A short while later I cast a Clouser minnow into a small hole and caught a small redfish, a three spot fish with one spot distinctly amidship on its starboard side. I released it, took two casts, got another bite and caught the same fish again. Which, as it turns out, was the only fish I would catch. And which was kind of strange, too.

I paddled for miles, much of the time while standing, and perhaps saw 10 fish all day, only three of which were seatrout. Did not come close to getting a shot.

So, did the storms and the rising water cause all the fish to move? Stay tuned next week, same time, same channel, for the exciting answer to that burning question!

Still Still Hot Mosquito Lagoon Fishing Report

This week was not better than last week. But it was still pretty darned good! Thus the still still hot Mosquito Lagoon fishing report.

Steve Duckett asked me to get some pictures of his Bouncer Flies. So Monday, in spite of the winds and clouds, I went kayak fishing out of Oak Hill. This slob trout was my first bite. It hit like a freight train and went about 40 feet into my backing-

I got other fish after that, but who cared?

Tuesday I visited the St. Johns River, trying to get a nice bass on Duckett’s Bouncer Frog. Two small crappie on Electric Sushi, no bass, no photo.

Thirty mile an hour winds on Wednesday kept me off the water.

Thursday I ended up scouting by myself on Mosquito Lagoon. I had limited time, so I visited spots that had been holding fish (they still were) and a couple places I hadn’t checked in a while (they were not). Three beautiful seatrout and one redfish were caught and released.

Friday Brian Hussey and his son, the tastefully named Alex, joined me for some light tackle Mosquito Lagoon fishing. For starters we had to get out and push because of the shallow water. Then at the first fishing spot we chased all the fish away without getting one. Then spots 2, 3, and 4 had had a fish evacuation, apparently. Nothing at any of them but two smallish trout. A boat ride ensued.

Thank God for spot 5. Nice trout, lots of reds, they weren’t eating very good but we managed to get several of each on the 3″ plastic minnows. So we started slow and ended strong, always a good script.

Still Hot Mosquito Lagoon Fishing Report

Incredibly, this week was even better than last week. Thus the still hot Mosquito Lagoon fishing report.

SuperBowl Sunday Fran and Christian Allen, fly fishers from Massachusetts, joined me for a cloudy half day on Mosquito Lagoon. We spooked all the fish off the first spot. We just could not see them.

The second spot produced a handful of seatrout, some of which were decent if not huge. Fortunately my anglers did not object to casting blindly.

He followed the trout up with this fish.

At the third spot Christian got a bite. His response? “That’s not a seatrout!” He was correct, as a 26 inch red had taken the fly. It was a short, sweet trip, and that fish was the culmination.

On Monday David Waring and his friends Ryan and Dan, all engineers from the Seattle area, joined me for some Mosquito Lagoon light tackle action. Redfish, seatrout, and black drum, all on either DOA CAL Shad or RipTide Sardines, came into the boat in spurts all day long. Dan posed with a couple of his fish!

Tuesday I went scouting out of River Breeze. I did not find fish everywhere I looked, but I certainly found fish. The water is getting really low.

Wednesday Coloradoan Donald Nunn joined me, again on Mosquito Lagoon. It was the slowest day of the week fishing-wise, but he still got several redfish and a couple nice trout, all on my favorite artificial baits (see above).

Friday Billy Vail, a fly fisher from South Bend, and Billy Vail, a student in Jacksonville, joined me out of River Breeze. We got trout and reds more or less continuously all day, with the best fish coming on the last cast of the day. The fish was a lovely 27 inch seatrout. If I could script every day that’s how it would play out.

On Saturday Mic Lauric and his friend Brian, fly fishers from Atlanta, joined me for a day of kayak fishing out of a busy River Breeze Park. Somewhat inauspiciously I got the first two fish just a few minutes from the launch, a fine trout and a slot red, on a Polar Fibre Minnow. On the rest of the way to the spot I had in mind we saw very little. Even my spot was slow at first- all the fish were at the far end of it.

Without the gruesome details, they had at least three doubles. Mic sent me the following email- “Thank you. Can’t wait to do it again. Please send pics when you can. We want to braggggg…”

Flies were synthetic minnow imitations. The fish were definitely on the feed. There goes that they don’t bite good on the full moon nonsense.

High, Dirty Water Mosquito Lagoon Fishing Report

Sunday I ran my On-the-Water Show and Tell Seminar on the Mosquito Lagoon. We ran the Mitzi around the lagoon from Haulover Canal down to Max Hoeck Creek, up to the north entrance of the Pole-Troll area, and back to Haulover. The water is dirty everywhere, but it’s dirtiest down south.

There are almost-ridiculous numbers of manatees around. We’re seeing them in places we never used to.

We saw a float in the water, the kind used on the DOA Deadly Combo. The first thing that came to mind was, “I wonder if there’s a fish on it?” Slowing to idle, we approached the float. When we got close, it went down!

I put a jig head on one of my lines, then hooked the line between the float and the fish. It turned out to be a redfish of about four pounds! We released the fish and the float was added to my tackle stash. That was all the fishing we did, and the only fish we saw.

Monday Scott Radloff joined me for some Mosquito Lagoon fishing from the Mitzi. We started behind some islands in the pole-troll area. We couldn’t see the bottom, but I quickly got a slot red on a Johnson Minnow. Scott hit a small trout on a Deadly Combo a few minutes later. We stayed back there over an hour, but those were the only bites we got.

Fishing along various bars we picked up about 15 seatrout using the Deadly Combo. Most of them were short, with a few decent ones. We did not see a redfish all day. The boat was on the trailer about 2 PM.

Tuesday son Alex and I went bass fishing together at a pond in Geneva. It was slow. He got one on a popper. I got four on Culprit worms.

Wednesday I took the kayak to River Breeze. In one way it was a crazy idea, since the water was high and dirty. I figured I could get into low traffic areas and look around. As it turned out, that was true.\

I looked in new spots and favorite spots. I tried sight fishing and blind casting. I used a spin rod, something I almost never do when kayaking. The water was cleaner up there than farther south. You could see the botton sometimes in almost two feet of water. I did not see a single fish, nor did I get a bite. I ran across two other kayakers who had the same report.

The boat was back on the roof of the car at about 230 PM.

Friday Dr. Greg Scible joined me for a day’s fishing on Mosquito Lagoon. Using Deadly Combos we picked at mostly undersized trout- one here, one there. We found a flat with fairly clean water. On that flat were just enough redfish to keep us there for over an hour. They were hard to see and although we had several not-particularly-good shots we did not get one, did not get an eat from one.

We ended the day using the Deadly Combo again. On the last cast of the day Greg got the best trout of the day, a fish that was maybe 19 inches long. He released it before I could get a picture.

One of my Aunt Huguette’s last wishes was that I spread her ashes at sea. Monday morning I wanted to discharge that responsibility. Friend Tammy Wilson joined me for a Port Canaveral trip in the Mitzi.

All that was left of the corporeal Huguette was in this biodegradable box.

The weather was outstanding. There were lots of mullet along the beaches, at least in the morning. We brought Huguette’s remains out off Cape Canaveral and gently released them, saying a short prayer as we did so. I had to wonder, were the molecules in the box some of the same ones that were in Huguette the last time I saw her, hugged her? It was a sobering moment.

And off goes my aunt into the depths.

We went looking for fish. We found a few blasting the mullet, ladyfish (small ones) and crevalle jacks (likewise small). We fooled a few with jigs. There was some Sargassum weed near the beach, so hoping we’d find some weed lines farther out we went out there looking, going out three miles. Nary a weed, nor anything else, did we see.

Coming back along the beach we ran it for miles. The mullet had mostly disappeared, and we didn’t see much. Each of us spotted a single tarpon, widely separated in time and space. We spent more time running than fishing, and did not catch anything else.

Wednesday morning found me wading a flat next to Long Island, near the St. Lucie Inlet, with Marcia Foosaner and Dapper Dan. I chose a spin rod based on the reports I got from Marcia, which was to say dirty water and scarce fish. Blind casting with a fly rod gets old too quick for me these days if there are no bites. Fishing is frequently more enjoyable when some fish participate…

There were a few fish popping mullet. I hooked and lost what we thought was a big snook, followed by three solid strikes from crevalle, all smaller sized ones. Then I got a bite from something whose fight I did not recognize. I had to actually see the fish before recognizing it as a Belizean-sized bonefish. All my casting was done with a DOA CAL Shad, three inch version.

Thursday found the Ocean Kayak searching for Mosquito Lagoon redfish. On my leader was the same redfish worm that’s been on there for three weeks now. It still works!

The first cast, a ten footer to the first fish I saw, resulted in a take. Into the backing, you gotta love those! The largest red I’ve seen since returning from Alaska.

The same old fly has caught at least a dozen fish now.

As mentioned at the top, there were a lot more manatees than redfish. The manatees were so shallow I could touch some of them with my fishing rod.

MAN-A-TEES!

I managed to catch two more reds, with the last one very symmetrically coming on the last cast, about 100 yards from where the first one was caught. All three fish were caught on very short casts. The dirty water means they can’t see you either.

Got my wires crossed with Tom Van Horn on Friday and ended up doing a variety of chores.

One of my Aunt Huguette’s last wishes was that I spread her ashes at sea. Monday morning I wanted to discharge that responsibility. As I prepped the boat for launch at Port Canaveral a 22′ Pathfinder came to the dock. Its occupants backed a trailer down and loaded her up. I walked over and asked them what it was like out there, in spite of the fact that the 15 mph winds out of the east made the answer pretty darn obvious. “Nasty,” they said. “We couldn’t get out.”

I tied the Mitzi back onto the trailer and drove to the St. Johns River, running up the Econ for a couple hours of fruitless casting. Huguette’s ashes currently sit on my kitchen table. Hopefully this week coming I can carry out her wish.

Wednesday morning saw a leisurely launch of the kayak at Mosquito Lagoon (get ready for the good news portion here). Within ten minutes I had seen four redfish. I got off the boat and started wading, looking. The first fish I threw to bit, a decent red of about 24 inches.

There were bald eagles, spoonbills, manatees, dolphins, more redfish, lots of big mullet- it was an outstanding angling experience.

I ended up with four reds, an Atlantic croaker (first one I’ve ever gotten in Mosquito Lagoon), a hooked and lost red, and the usual missed shots and blown opportunities. It was solid fishing, all with a six-weight, in spite of the wind, clouds, and dirty water.

Thursday I joined Capt. Chris Myers for some more Mosquito Lagoon fishing, although the start was not nearly as leisurely, since we out there shortly after first light. I don’t generally get up that early to fish anymore, but there is undeniably a magic about watching the day unfold. Anyhow…

You have to be up to experience the magic of daybreak.

Chris put me on a pod of tailing reds right away. A cast, a bite, a twelve inch seatrout. The reds disappeared.
Between us we had at least a dozen shots at tailing redfish. All mine were with the same black redfish worm I’d used so successfully the previous day. There were no conversions. Chris tried with both fly and spin tackle, for no conversions as well. So finding the tailers and getting the shots worked pretty well. Getting the fish to bite did not work at all.

Still, I always enjoy fishing with Chris. He’s an outstanding angler. Thank you sir, next one is on me.

Friday was bride Susan’s birthday. We had a lovely dinner at Rocco’s Italian Grille in Winter Park, then went to the Blue Bamboo Center for the Arts. The John DePaola Quintet was playing, doing a tribute to Cannonball Adderly. They were good enough that at one point tears of joy were streaming freely down my face, just an outstanding performance, and altogether an awesome evening. The venue is fantastic, a tiny club that will sit about 100 people. If you live anywhere near Winter Park, it’s certainly worth checking out.

I hope the east wind quits soon so I can check the ocean fishing!

Home Again! Orlando Fishing Report

It’s great to be home! And because I’m home again, this is the Home Again Orlando fishing report!

Sunday was spent cleaning and stocking the Mitzi for fall fishing. Oh, she is dying to go. So are the paddle vessels and the johnboat. They’ll all get their licks in. Son Maxx left a small sailboat in my yard. I am going to teach myself to sail it. It’s more than past time that I mastered that skill.

Salmon fishing in Southeast Alaska this past summer was pretty much a bust. I need smoked salmon, though, so I bought some keta salmon fillets ($8 each) at the local market. “A chum by any other name would smell as sweet.” My apologies to Mr. Shakespeare.

Anyhow, I thawed them, brined them, and on Monday put them on the smoker. They turned out terribly. I don’t know if was the fish or the new recipe, but the product is pretty much inedible.

Monday was Labor Day! I know better than to go out of the house then.

The rest of the week I toured the local lagoons. Tuesday me and Mitzi went to Mosquito Lagoon. Water was brown, pretty gross. I wonder if I’ll ever see it clean again. I saw six or eight redfish, got four reasonable shots. The two spin rod shots were rejected. Two fly rod shots resulted in a bite and a release of a fish about 20 inches long.

Some time was spent chucking the best fish-finder made, the DOA Deadly Combo. There were three bites, none of which were converted. Two decent (20 inch or so) trout came right up next to the boat before shaking off. About five very warm hours were spent fishing.

Thursday me and Ocean Kayak went to Banana River Lagoon. The water wasn’t clean, but it wasn’t brown either. I could see my feet in knee-deep water. I saw a seatrout, a handfull of snook, and a dozen or so each of smallish redfish and small black drum. I also saw two blue crabs and two horseshoe crabs, and got some whiffs of a heavenly aroma that I hope was black mangrove flowers, although I did not see or hear any honeybees.

One black drum, two small reds, and a hardhead catfish fell for a black redfish worm in about six hours, with maybe three of four unsuccessful shots as well. It was pretty tough and very warm fishing.

But Friday was tougher. Tammy and I took the Mitzi out of Kennedy Point on the Indian River Lagoon. Following a hot tip we found a bunch of baby tarpon. We spent an hout throwing to them while they ignored us. Then it got worse.

I poled a mile or two of shoreline, saw some mullet and a single sheepshead. The water looks worse than Mosquito Lagoon. We tried the power plant as a last resort, where two small ladyfish attacked my jig, but both shook off before I could boat them.

Someone lit what I hope was a controlled burn in the vicinity of Pine Island, although it did not look very controlled to me. Breathing the smoke was the most exciting thing that happened to us. The boat was on the trailer at 1 PM.

Fishing!
Sunday we ran two On-The-Water Show and Tell Fishing Seminars on the Mosquito Lagoon, one in the morning, and one in the afternoon. I would like to thank everyone who attended. It was very windy and wavy and everyone was very accepting of the situation, very gracious. Thank you all!

Rose Mary Berg sent me the following note-

“I wanted to take a minute to Thank You again for the seminar yesterday for Justin.  He thought you were just ‘awesome’ and filled with so much knowledge. I cannot Thank You enough for sharing your knowledge and afternoon with us.  It was a blessing.”

We checked both side of the lagoon, from Max Hoeck Creek to Tiger Shoal. There was no clean water anywhere.

Monday I took the Bang-O-Craft scouting on the St. Johns River, launching at SR 50. Fishing downstream of the bridge for three hours I got two shad on crappie jigs. I did not see another fisherman.

Tuesday I took the Bang-O-Craft scouting on the St. Johns River, launching at CS Lee Park. I had received a good report about shad in the Econ but did not get a bite there. I did get quite a few in the St. Johns on crappie jigs and on shad flies. I ran into Ron Rebeck and Jon Cave, man, it’s been a long time since I saw them! They look good, appear to be doing well, and it was good to see them.

Wednesday morning Curtis Duffield met me at CS Lee Park. We first went to where the stripers were biting last week. They are not there any more, unfortunately.

We responded by going fly fishing for shad. We fished two spots and probably got close to 20 in about eight hours, steady if slow fishing. I hadn’t seen Curtis in a couple years, and it was a good, long conversation with enough fish to make it interesting. The river is still high, and the shad are probably close to being done for this season. And Curtis got his first shad on the fly rod, a cause to celebrate!

Thursday I had some errands to run in Oviedo. I brought a fly rod. There’s a retention pond near downtown Oviedo I have been wanting to fish for a while. The water was dirty (but cleaner than Mosquito Lagoon) and the wind was blowing 20 (as it was all week), but I caught two bass on a chartreuse rattle rouser. One was small, but the other was pretty chunky. Retention ponds are an underutilized resource for fly fishers.

Friday, after running some errands, I launched the kayak at Snow Hill Road for some Econlockhatchee fishing. The water level is dropping (2.8 on the gauge that morning) and the temperature is rising. I had fairly high expectations. Unfortunately they were not met.

The river looked beautiful. The gum trees, red maples, and willows are all leafing out. The air plants gave the still-bare oaks some red color, too. But in three hours I only got one bass about a foot long, my first Econ bass of 2016, and a few aggressive sunfish popped my bass bug. Just did not see many fish.

What I did see were two or three tons of alligators. There are plenty of big reptiles on that stream.

Saturday I renewed my CPR/1st aid card, something everyone with sense should do.

Fishing!
The plan for Monday was to visit the Banana River Lagoon. Tom Van Horn went Sunday. His report of nasty, dirty water and hard-to-find fish saved me the trip.

Tuesday John and Sue Burns joined me for a day’s fishing on Mosquito Lagoon. Yes, it was blowing. The sun kept peeking out from between the clouds. Fishing was not fabulous, and the nasty water moved into areas that had been clean last week. Damn algae.

John got a slot trout on a DOA Shrimp, and a nice four-pounder class fish on the RipTide Weedless Shrimp. We got several small fish on the Deadly Combo. Sue finally got a slot redfish on a DOA CAL Shad, three inch. And that was it for the day.

Postponed Thursday’s trip to next week, the second time in two week’s that trip has been bounced.

Friday I got new tires for the trailer, then went to the St. Johns for some shad fishing. Bluebird sky, winds 10-15 from the north. Fly fishers, you’ll need a sinking line. The water is high, almost flooding the pastures. Two boats with fly fishers took six fish that I saw. I got three shad in four hours, using 1/16th ounce crappie jigs with one inch curly tails.

Saturday my bride brought me to the Florida Gourding Society’s Gourd Festival in Melbourne. It may sound worse than a trip to dentist, but actually it was quite fascinating, with lots of beautiful work. My shaky photos do not do it justice.

Mercury Rising Mosquito Lagoon Fishing Report

Observing the heavens is one of my passions. I’ve known for years that it’s possible to see the planet Mercury with the naked eye. I could never find it- until this week. Now I’ve seen it three times. And such fishing as got done by me this week happened in the Mosquito Lagoon. Combine the two and you get the Mercury Rising Mosquito Lagoon fishing report.

For those of you who would like to observe this planet, get outside about 6-6:15 am. Look to the east and you will see a bright star above the horizon. It’s the planet Venus. Below Venus and a few degrees to the north is a much dimmer star- that’s Mercury. Check it out now while you’ve got Venus to point the way.

Monday it blew like snot. I don’t even remember what I did.

Tuesday, a beautiful day, I spent the morning at the car dealership getting the wife’s chariot repaired. In the afternoon I did a little local exploring. Stop one was at Riverside Park in Oviedo. Several years ago son Maxx talked me into launching a canoe there (not a hard thing to do) and paddling down to SR 419. What an obstacle course. Anyway, that’s the only time I went to that park. Turns out it’s quite lovely and the Little Econ, although little more than a drainage ditch for east Orlando, actually looks quite nice coming through here. Further investigation required.

Stop two was a little pond off of Lockwood Road. Walked around it twice, the second time with a fishing rod with a plastic worm on the line. Did not get a bite. Did not see anything other than guppies.

Stop three was the Econ River Wilderness area, off Old Lockwood Road, a rather pretentious name for a 300 acre property that is certainly not a wilderness. It’s a nice enough place to go for a walk or go running though, a valuable patch of woods in an area of crowded housing developments.

Wednesday Tom Van Horn (the fishing guide, not the comedian) met me at Haulover Canal so we could do a little Mosquito Lagoon scouting. The water south of Georges Bar looks TERRIBLE, brown and turbid. Even spots that were clean a couple weeks ago look awful now. We found nothing there.

Up by Oak Hill we found some clean water and a few fish, and managed one redfish and one seatrout each, on (not surprisingly if you read this report very often) 3″ DOA CAL Shad. Not a great day by any means, but better than no cheese.

Thursday’s charter postponed until next week because of the wind.

Friday Mr. Ryan Houlihan, a fly fisher from Virginia, met me at River Breeze. It was a tough day, with lots of clouds and considerable wind, hard for a fly fisher. Ryan missed one bite at the first spot, but most of the fish we saw we had already run over and they ignored the fly.

He missed another bite at the second spot, this one from a trout (we could see the action). None of the other fish we saw there cooperated.

We checked a couple other spots with few visible fish. At this point the clouds were pretty solid and we just couldn’t see. In the places we could see there was nothing to see. It ended up Mr. Houlihan did not get another bite and we went fishless. I don’t like that but hey, that’s fishing, especially with the fly rod.
