The Bang-O-Craft Rides Again Report

The Bang-O-Craft Rides Again Report

Thank you for reading this Bang-O-Craft Rides Again report. Once again, I did not fish enough this week. Perhaps I should just accept the fact that fishing once a week is my new normal. Or I could start fishing on weekends! Perish THAT thought.

We had squirrels get into a part of our house. The termite inspector came out this week (one of the reasons I didn’t get out). He did not find any termites, but did find that the squirrels have been partying in our attic. We have had two squirrel traps on the outside of our house for over a week now, but have caught nothing. ????? More days are going to be tied up with that, I’m sure.

Friday morning, on a beautiful day, I launched the Bang-O-Craft at the Beacon 42 ramp at Mosquito Lagoon, intending to do some scouting because I am taking a young guy out fly-fishing on Monday. Want him to at least have a few fish to throw at. Had the trolling motor and everything. This vessel only has an eight horsepower motor, so while it is much faster than paddling, it still ain’t too speedy. I enjoyed running it- I should probably use it more.

I crossed the lagoon to the east side to a place where I often used to find fish. There were fish there. Unfortunately, they were all mullet. I did hit a decent trout by blind-casting a DOA Shrimp in a little hole, the only bite I would get.

I ran the trolling motor on high for a couple hours, looking for fish. It was hard to see because the water is high and green, but eventually I saw one, a fat redfish, near Vann’s Island. It ignored my first two casts and spooked off the third…

I finally found a spot with a decent number of fish, enough that I pulled out the fly rod. I even saw some tailing! The fish can hear the trolling motor and they don’t bite after they do. Actually, they spook off the fly. They may have been especially spooky, since the lagoon surface looked like a sheet of glass.

Anyway, I did not get one, and ran the battery down until the trolling motor could hardly move the boat. Then I ran back to Beacon 42 and loaded up. The mission was to find fish, not catch them, so mission accomplished. Honestly, I wouldn’t have minded hooking a nice redfish, even if that was not the mission. Perhaps Monday…

Lame though it might be, that’s the Bang-O-Craft Rides Again report. Thanks for reading!

Every day is a blessing. Don’t waste it- Go fishing! Go paddling! Go walking! Stay active!
