Two Day Lagoons Report

Two Day Lagoons Report

Thank you for reading this Two Day Lagoons Report. Went kayak fishing Monday and Wednesday, and while fishing was far from stellar, both days were very enjoyable.

Also, I have an article about a day’s lagoon fishing in the October issue of Florida Sportsman magazine.

Monday I went kayak fishing on the Indian River Lagoon, mostly with fly, but I did take a few casts with the spin rod. Got there just after sunrise. It was glorious being out again! The day was gorgeous, but not for fishing. The wind was around 10 mph with gusts. Combined with high water, spooky fish, and my rust, it made for tough conditions.

I found a few redfish. They had to have body parts above the surface for me to see them. They acted like heavily-fished fish do- if anything seemed the slightest bit amiss, they simply disappeared. I threw at maybe a dozen, spooked the daylights out of a couple, had the rest just vanish, all but one that took the fly. It ran my line through some weeds and then got off.

I cast to what turned out to be the last redfish I saw with the plastic shad. The cast seemed good, but the fish bolted away from the offering. I worked my way back to the car, and was loaded up by 1 PM. If you hook and lose a fish and don’t catch anything, it that still a skunking? It didn’t have the feel of one.

Tuesday, worked on returning the house to normal with chores, both inside and out. House chores never end.

Got out again on Wednesday, this time to Mosquito Lagoon. Sun shone in my face the entire drive out there, then a layer of clouds rolled in when I got there and it was overcast until almost mid-day. Wind was north-ish, strong enough to require wading to fly fish. Tried a bunch of reliable spots with the fly rod, did not see nor touch a fish.

As the sun poked out I started heading back, resigned to the skunking, casting the spin rod as I went. Wasn’t I shocked at the lure (a 4″ DOA CAL jerkbait) being smashed as I reeled it up for a new cast. A snook, about 24 inches, a surprising but welcome skunk-chaser. A while later I got another, smaller one. So the week was not a total bust.

Thursday and Friday, chores, appointments, and working on the new spottedtail.com website ate up the hours. Our AC is toast. Research and replacement will eat some time (and money) up next week, I’m sure.

Every day is a blessing. Don’t waste it- Go fishing! Go paddling! Go walking! Take a vacation! Stay active!

That’s the Two Day Lagoons Report. Thanks for reading this!
